As a current fourth year medical student, I continue to stay active in both the clinical and research spaces. I am looking forward to the year ahead, filled with sub-internships, conferences, and networking opportunities.

I declared Urology as my specialty of choice shortly after my third-year surgery clerkship. As an MD/PhD student, my friends from my original MD class now doubly serve as mentors. Here we are representing at South Central AUA in Austin, TX!

In 2024, I defended my thesis and graduated with a PhD in Patient-Oriented Research. As a first-generation college student to Vietnam War refugees, I owe it all to my parents' sacrifices and unconditional support.

Also during graduate school, I met & married my very supportive husband, Hans. By serendipity, he is a computer scientist and mechanical engineer - a very handy skillset to match my PhD in machine learning and artificial intelligence.

During my first year of graduate school, I applied to the NIH F30 grant (scored in the 25th percentile!) and several other national grants. I am proud to have my PhD supported by the ASCO Conquer Cancer Foundation and UNMC Bukey Memorial Fund.

I completed the first two years of medical school before transitioning to graduate school. Bringing it back to my roots, I attended the national AUA 2022 in New Orleans, LA to kick it all off. We had 14 posters this year - go team!

My pandemic hobby? Competitive powerlifting. This is me winning my first medal (second place!) in my weight class at the Nebraska State Championships. Ask me about my max squat & deadlift!

I was accepted to the MD/PhD program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the Ahlering lab's first remote lab meeting.. and the start of Zoom medical school.

Ultimately, this led to a Master's in Biomedical and Translational Science. My thesis used erection fullness to predict potency post-prostatectomy. Still, when my very traditional, immigrant parents asked, I wasn't sure how to explain...

As I learned more research, I found my niche in predictive modeling and began to delve into our institutional datasets for prognostic factors predicting prostate cancer morbidity and mortality. Here is our team at WCET 2017 in Vancouver, BC.

May 10, 2016

After joining the Ahlering lab in 2015, I attended my first national conference, AUA 2016, where I presented my very first poster and podium on "Critical Assessment of Radiotherapy following Radical Prostatectomy: Timing, Recurrence, and Outcomes".
